Who doesn’t want bold, dramatic lashes every single time? There are hundreds of mascaras out there that promise just that. But your real life experience differs quite a bit from the promised results.
Mascara Hacks #1: Make it last
If you use your favorite mascara every day, chances are it will dry out way before you can scrape every last drop out of the tube!
If you find that you mascara is dry and clumpy, just add a few drops of saline solution (for contact lenses) to the tube. Move the wand around a bit to make sure everything mixes well.
Another tip is never to use a pumping up and down motion with your wand, to prevent too much air getting inside. Rather, just like above, move the wand around in the tube, to coat the brush with mascara.
First you want to get rid of the excess on the wand. You don’t need that much product, and this will only result in a clumpy spider leg mess! Just scrape the excess of on the edge of the tube, or give the wand a wipe with a Kleenex.
Don’t just comb your mascara in a straight motion through your lashes! Start at the base, and with a seesaw motion work your way slowly to the tip of the lashes.
To get the most of your mascara brush, try also to rotate the brush at the same time. This might take a bit of practice. But when you have the rotating seesaw motion down, you will be amazed at the results.
And of course, always do a second coat! But do the second coat right away, if the first coat is dry, you run into the danger of clumping!
It happens to the best of us (and almost daily to me). You blinked too fast or too hard, or you slipped while applying the mascara!
The best trick I learned is not to clean it up right away! Give the mascara time to dry on your skin. It will harden, and that way you pick off the mess quite easy, without causing more smudges!
If the smudges are on your eyelid, go over it with concealer or eyeshadow to hide any mascara residue that does not want to budge (source: www.imalmostreadyblog.com)
Mascara Hacks #4: Use two different types of Mascara
Remember earlier I mentioned always to apply a second coat of Mascara? Now we are taking it a step further by using another kind for the second layer.
It doesn’t have to be the same brand or anything like this! Mix and match to your heart’s content until you find the perfect pair of your lashes.
A rule of thumb is to use a lengthening/curling mascara for the first coat, and for the second a highly pigmented (the blackest black you have) volumizing mascara. Extra points if you use a lash primer first!
My combos vary, but at the moment my favorite is first Benefit Roller Lash, followed by Urban Decay Perversion mascara.
Ever since I started using this Mascara hack, people always comment on how great my lashes look. Sometimes they even think that they are fake lashes.
Mascara Hacks #5: Air it out
Not liking your brand new mascara? If the reason is that the mascara seems to “wet”, just open it every day and wiggle the brush around in the tube. The air will make the mascara more manageable after you do this for a few days.
I use this trick a lot with my brand new Maybelline Mascaras, and it works like a charm!
Hack number four is my favorite. And it changed my lash game! Which mascara hack is new to you? Do you have one that I did not mention?
Until next time
